Israel’s fault lines and the loss of a Jewish humanity
JVL Introduction
Mark Braverman challenges head-on those supporters of Israel who are appalled at the current government but harbour illusions about returning to the status quo ante – seen as relatively pure and unproblematic.
It wasn’t. What the protestors don’t understand, affirms Braverman, “is that the religious takeover is entirely consistent with, indeed integral to, the state’s expansionist, supremacist, and militarist nature.”
The current government is not an aberration, but one in which Zionist fundamentals are on full and open display.

Israel’s fault lines and the loss of a Jewish humanity
Thomas Friedman’s condemnation of Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul is based on the false premise that the Israeli judicial system protects democracy. It never has for the millions of Palestinians under colonial rule.

Neither Israel nor USA recognise the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, therefore a law unto themselves, without international accountability. It seems they also have nothing but contempt for United Nations resolutions either, so much for international morality and the international community.
I am an atheist man born in England to Christian parents, an Irish father, and an English mother. I am married to a wonderful lady who is of Jewish descent. I have Jewish friends who do not like the politics of the Israeli government. I lived in South Africa for 14 years during the apartheid regime. The Israeli government was very close to the South African Government and assisted in sanction busting. There was also military and nuclear weapon cooperation. Many Jews in South Africa opposed apartheid and some even helped the ANC. I am definitely not anti-Jewish but I am extremely critical of the Israeli government and its occupation of Palestinian lands and building of settlements there. Apparently, this makes me antisemitic and at risk of having my membership of the Labour Party withdrawn. I am a socialist who would like to see a world where a person’s colour, ethnicity, religion or sexuality is seen as no different to height, hair colour, build etc.
