Israel’s protest leaders give the anti-occupation bloc the cold shoulder

JVL Introduction

Oren Ziv reports from Tel Aviv for +972 Magazine/Local Call on the latest anti-occupation bloc demonstration, cold-shouldered by the organisers of the anti-government protest movement.

They seem to fear that their “pure” protest will be contaminated by the participation of those with more radical anti-occupation views and frequent Palestinian flag-waving.

The bloc itself met earlier in Dizengoff Street with support from the Arab-Jewish communist party, Hadash, Breaking the Silence, Standing Together, Combatants for Peace, Peace Now, and more and included a sizeable number of Palestinian citizens.

After their own protest at 56 years of occupation, most joined the mainstream demonstration as a unified bloc with their flags and slogans.

A protest marking the occupation’s 56th year was rejected by mainstream organizers, showing how messages about Palestinians are still being silenced.
