Israel: the gods are taking poetic revenge

In this eloquent piece veteran Israeli journalist Amira Hass searingly exposes the ideological confusion of the privileged Israeli Jewish intelligentsia – the prime organisers of mass demonstrations in Israel against the far-right and in support of the ‘independent’ Supreme Court.

Hass notes the irony that it is this court’s rulings that have justified to generations of Israelis that it is completely normal to tyrannize another people deprived of their most basic rights. She reminds us that the benefit and gratification which the protestors have derived from supporting the apartheid regime is now coming back to bite them.

But Hass’s voice is without rancour, recognising that for now the best internal hope of avoiding another Palestinian Nakba is for Israeli protestors to understand the existential nature of the apartheid poison in their society.

Let the somnolent British liberal intelligentsia take note of the dynamics of racist demagoguery and oppression in our own country.
