The American Jewish war over Zionism can begin

JVL Introduction

Phil Weiss’s anger at the rise of the fascistic right in Israel is palpable and his scorn for the thugs coming into government is incandescent. While he is alarmed for what this means for Palestinians and for what remains of Israel’s civil society he also sees a positive.

It is no longer possible for the American Jewish leadership to deny what is happening in Israel. They have two choices: to become open advocates for an Apartheid state; or to admit that their Zionism has led them into a moral dead end. While the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League and the Democratic Majority for Israel have opted for denial, others like influential and until now ferociously pro-Israel commentator Tom Friedman has followed the path of Peter Beinart and Jeffrey Goldberg in denouncing developments in Israel.

The allegiance of the US Jewish Community to Israel is more uncertain than ever: this moral introspection has yet to trouble British community leaders to anything like the same extent but it must come soon.

The American Jewish war over Zionism can begin

Zionism destroys everything in its path. It has corrupted every major American Jewish organization. And Netanyahu’s return allows American Jews to acknowledge this.

  • Anyone with any knowledge or understanding could take this article apart, almost line by line. Weiss extrapolates his absurd narrative from the character of one despicable individual, Ben-Gvir, who Netanyahu will probably sideline anyway. When a writer start throwing around extreme unfounded rhetoric, sweeping assumptions, generalites or downright lies, he just becomes a mirror image of Trump. Weiss even managed to throw in the word Nazis. Really the article is infantile, another similarity with Trump.

  • To Jaye: Noted that no facts are challenged and that Netanyahu appears to be a benign figure… Right…

  • To Jaye: Only one despicable individual? Netanyahu himself does not qualify as a despicable individual? My, how standards have fallen. My only disagreement with the article is regarding Weiss’s optimism about Thomas Friedman ‘pivoting’. I believe Freidman merely laments the terrible PR outcome of this election that even his blatant one sided defence of Zionism would find hard to whitewash.
