WE have published many analyses extolling the sheer tenacity of Israel’s protest movement, now in its 33rd week, but showing how severely flawed is the democracy that this movement is defending.
Here Neve Gordon looks at the contradictions.
On the one hand soldiers fear that with the proposed overhaul of the judiciary, the government is abdicating its responsibility to protect its Jewish citizens.
How come? There is a deep fear that, unless the Supreme Court is there as a shield, soldiers might well be vulnerable to international prosecution for war crimes.
On the other hand, there is near unanimity on the apartheid nature of the regime they are wedded to.
The current government is proceeding apace with deepening the occupation, with wide support from its Jewish citizens. Its recent move to extend the Admissions Committees Law which allows settlements to exclude non-Jewish Israelis (i.e. entrenches apartheid) was passed in the Knesset with only 2 of its 110 Jewish members dissenting…

It is vital , as Neve Gordon does, to get the message across to the MSM the sham ‘democracy’ that these massive demonstrations are defending, and the unanimity of the Jewish Israeli masses, and their beloved Supreme Court in upholding the Zionist apartheid state. The same Supreme Court that Connie’s with the occupation and supports the war crimes in Palestinian displacement and illegal settlement expansion, also with the collaboration of the US and UK.
We need a breakthrough to oppose the censorship and silencing of our voices and stand firm in support of Palestinian and human rights and international law. La lutta continua!
Really interesting piece. Important also to acknowledge settlement policies within Israel as well as OPT. I was wondering if JVL has any other articles on the different strands within the settler movement and their geography.

True, but on what basis? The only “alliance” that is possible between Palestinians (whether or not they are Israeli citizens) and “Israel’s Jewish citizenry” is one based on class, i.e. a united working class. The relative and undeniable privileges of Israeli workers over Palestinian workers cannot be maintained indefinitely and Israeli workers will then drawn their own conclusions about who they unite with: their Palestinian brothers and sisters or the Israeli capitalist class.
