Are there working legal routes for refugees?
JVL Introduction
With its Nationalities and Borders Bill set to become law imminently, the government continues to claim that its main aim is to stop people traffickers exploiting vulnerable people by providing “illegal routes”. Leaving aside, for now, the fact that it is literally impossible to be an illegal asylum seeker, this article shows that the government is effectively punishing those using the routes that this government recognises as “legal” ie part of a official resettlement scheme, this time for Ukrainians.
Warnings of the unworkability of the scheme were made back in March but seem to have gone unheeded. The government claims 40,000 visas have been issued but only 6,000 Ukrainians have made it to the UK. And no other European country is asking for visas.
