Stop the draconian nationality and borders bill
JVL Introduction
Shami Chakrabarti and Simon Woolley, writing in the Guardian, do not pull their punches.
The proposed nationality and borders bill is draconian, giving the government unprecedented powers to strip citizens of their citizenship.
They already have limited power to do so – and these powers have already been abused.
This proposed extension is a kick in the teeth for every person with foreign-born parents. It will leave millions as second-class citizens, fearing that their citizenship might be stripped without notice and without any effective right of appeal.
Chakrabarti and Woolley will be opposing the worst of the bill in the House of Lords. But their work needs to be complemented by the campaign on the streets.
