The Smearing Of Emma Watson

JVL Introduction

In this post for Globetrotter–Independent Media Institute, Sut Jhally and Roger Waters look at the recent smear campaign against outspoken activist Emma Watson.

Any support for the Palestinian people seems to attract the weight of Israeli displeasure, as happened in this case with senior Israeli officials leading the denunciation of this post as antisemitic.

We have already reported on this story here, here and here.

The authors argue that throwing accusations of antisemitism around like confetti can have unintended consequences. If criticism of outrageous Israeli action is called antisemitic it devalues the term, and can let real antisemitism (the right-wing fascist variety that really does hate Jews as Jews) off the hook.
