We Shall Not Give Up This Fight!
JVL Introduction
Despite the huge amount of opposition, the government has passed the Nationality and Borders Bill. This statement is from Together With Refugees, a community based coalition, mainly of groups directly supporting refugees. which outlines once again some of the dangers of the act, its lack of support and also emphasising that we cannot give up. They note that “the huge resistance that the government has faced in pushing through these policies will make it more difficult to implement”.
The fightback against such draconian laws must continue. This legislation is part of a raft of bills that will limit our freedoms, human rights and, if we are not careful, our compassion. The impact of this, the Police Bill and the Elections Bill also fall disproportionately on people from racialised communities. JVL will continue to campaign to repeal this – and the other – heinous pieces of legislation.
Late addition: you can contribute to Freedom from Torture‘s legal fund to challenge the legislation here: Noting that campaigners “have won a court case forcing the government to scrap plans to push back refugee boats in the channel. On a day where the government thinks they’ve won – let’s show them that the opposite is true, let’s get ready to take legal action – again.”
