Are Israelis allowed to see Palestinians as human?

JVL Introduction

Gideon Levy describes the surge of emotion in Israel as prisoners are exchanged.

The joy as families meet their loved ones, mixed with grief and anxiety about what they have suffered since October 7. And similar scenes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, of course.

But are Israelis allowed to rejoice over Palestinian families reunited?

No.

“[T]he only things that should be shown are those that serve Israel’s interests. And indeed, in the Israeli media not only is Gaza’s suffering banned from the screen, so is the joy of parents upon their daughter’s return from prison, lest we be tempted to think that they too are human beings, with feelings and all.”

_______

There are around 8,200 Palestinians in Israeli custody, over 2,200 in “administrative detention” i.e. without charge or trial. More than 3,000 of these arrests have been in the West Bank since October 7.

Is It permissible to rejoice in the joy of Palestinians released from Israeli prisons?

  • It would seem that the mainstream media here too follows much the same agenda of showing long segements of joyful Israeli reunions accompanied by emotioanal personal narratives while the Palestinian reunions are shown but briefly and often with the briefest of commentary. Even worse they will pick on the case of a released prisoner ‘convicted’ ( the inverted commas indicate the sham of military trials) of some violent crime against Israel.

  • Thank you Gideon Levy Where do you start, Israeli Leaders are taking Propaganda to a new level, it appears to be driven by paranoia, why, is it because the tide of support from Western Countries is showing signs of weakening and more of its own citizens are starting to question what is happening. Is it making the Leaders see their grip and control starting to slip? People are seeing more evidence of what Israel is and has been doing and not just recently, for example, the number of Palestinians that are in prison, including women and children, many of them for years, even without trial. The majority of people will be against it and be asking questions and wondering what else is happening that they don’t agree with.
If the MSM starts reporting this with stories and photos, it might even start telling some truths of what else has been happening. I do hope so!!
