The watermelon, symbol of solidarity with Palestinians
JVL Introduction
The watermelon is ubiquitous on demonstrations today with its red pulp, green-white rind and black seeds standing in for the Palestinian flag.
Anna Furman of Associated Press explains its origins as a symbol of resistance: when the Palestinian flag and even creating art in its four colours was banned by Israel in the 1980s, people started holding slices of watermelon aloft.
In recent months it has become the global symbol of solidarity and resistance. Long may it grow!
