Israel does have a strategy for Gaza

JVL Introduction

After the 1967 war the international community came to recognise the “inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war.”

It didn’t stop Israel which, in the fifty years since 1967 built over 270 settlements and outposts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, all equally illegal under international law.

They still are but no-one any longer expects the vast majority of them to be dismantled as part of any agreement. They are simply accepted as stubborn facts on the ground.

So too with Gaza, argues Tariq Kenney-Shawa of the think tank Al-Shabaka.

Much of Gaza’s infrastructure, already heavily damaged by over 16 years of Israeli blockade, is now beyond repair. Over 85% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million is internally displaced, over half of Gaza’s housing is severely damaged. Other things being equal, Gaza will be ethnically cleansed in a year or two as it is made simply unliveable for Palestinians.

The international community, led by the US, could stop it. Israel’s strategy is based on the belief that they won’t. So far, it seems to have judged it right.

Opinion: Israel’s Gaza strategy: Create facts on the ground that can’t be undone

  • Excellent article. Sums up the ethic cleansing issue clearly. Governments like the USA, UK and Canada must cut off all military and economic aid to the current right wing Israeli government until it ends the occupation of all lands stolen from the Palestinian peoples in Gaza, the West Bank and the Golan Heights. This would be a start.

  • This is an important article. Israel is intent on stealing the land and all its natural resources. We now know that agreements have been signed with BP and other companies. Gaza could become on enormous gas production and distribution plant.
