End the War on Iran
Jewish Voice for Liberation condemns the coordinated US-Israeli bombing campaign against Iran and the UK government’s decision to allow its military bases to be used by US planes.
We say this not because we support Iran’s authoritarian, theocratic government. We do not. But, as with Iraq under Saddam Hussein, bombing the country into submission is no solution to anything.
The campaign led by Trump and Netanyahu is both immoral and a gross violation of international law. It is a recipe for prolonged chaos and destabilisation of the entire region.
The pretext for this war – Iran’s nuclear programme – was well on its way to being resolved through negotiations. Iran had agreed to the majority of Trump’s demands, not least regular IAEA inspections. The bombing deliberately pre-empted a peaceful, diplomatic solution.
There was no decision taken by the US Congress or the UN to authorise the war on Iran which makes the intervention illegal under US as well as international law.
There is no plan for “after the war”. As with Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, the most likely outcome is more chaos and a boost for terrorist groups, endangering the entire region and indeed the rest of the world.
The impact on people across the region has already been terrible. They subjected to a total lockdown; and the first airstrikes fell on a school in Minab in southern Iran, killing at least 153, mostly children. Civilian casualties have been mounting ever since and will continue to rise as long as this unprovoked assault continues.
The lockdown on Gaza has led to panicked stockpiling and rising prices, cutting off already inadequate aid deliveries, all leading to fears of starvation. The World Food Kitchen which supplies around a million meals a day expects to run out of food imminently.
The UK government seems shocked that Iran should dare to retaliate for the assassination of its Head of State and senior military leaders. We are ashamed that it seems incapable of seeing events through the eyes of others, let alone understand the folly of this action.
As ever, double standards prevail. Israel is the only state in West Asia that does in fact have nuclear weapons. It has never allowed independent inspections – something that was asked for as far back as Kennedy’s US Presidency in 1962. And yet no western government challenges this nuclear capability in the hands of a rogue state that is unashamedly continuing its genocide of the Palestinians. Everything is permitted to Israel, because it is “our” rogue state.
Freedom for the Iranian people from their repressive and oppressive regime is imperative and long overdue. But this cannot be achieved by military bombardment by governments whose claimed concern for democracy barely masks an intention to crush all resistance to their own power. Israeli leaders and their hawkish American allies have been planning an attack like this for decades.
We support the calls on our government to retract its permission for US warplanes to use its military bases whether in the UK, Cyprus or the Chagos Islands. The use of these bases makes the UK actively complicit in the US’s illegal acts.
We say:
- Not in our name.
- Freedom for the Iranian people.
- End the aggression.
The UK Government is led by a self-professed Zionist. The ranks of both Labour and Tory parties are replete with members who are signed-up Friends of Israel. What can we expect from such people? The Americans don’t bomb children. They just give the bombs to the Israelis and supply the navigational intelligence to secure the targeting of starving kids and schools. Look! Hands clean! As clean as their complicit British friends. Gaza is the background to understanding the way the British behave. Shame on them all.
Is there a possible other agenda we dont know about? Israel is trying to knock out all of Iran’s military capability with US assistance. Iran is the only country currently a threat to Israel’s colonisation of neighbouring territory. Watch this space for further Israeli annexations. South Lebanon?
After reading this article, which makes assertions against the Iranian state, that it doesn’t even back up, when it’s come under attack, I’m left wondering what exactly is it that makes jvl for liberation, because said claims just seem to be standard imperialist talking points, but from the liberal-left.
First of all may i just say on behalf of my Wife.Myself and Our Family and Friends to all Members and Friends of the JVL Group.I hope and pray that if you have any Relitives or Friends in Israel. Iran. or any of the surrounding Countries. We Pray to God to keep them sll safe and well for you all. As it must be such a worrying time for you all.Not Knowing.
Trump and Netanyahu illegally attacked another country and took out its leader at the same time killing Innocent civillians When you have leaders of Countries who think the Law doesn’t apply to them. In this case International Law .I feel so sorry for all the innocent men women and children From their Countries and the countries their attacking.. Because of these two Dangerous leaders of their countries. They are placing their own citizans in harms way. Because of retaliation By the country they attacked having the right to defend themselves. But it looks like this time they have underestimated that country in a big way Military Wise. This is Surley one of the best times to get rid of their own leaders by forcing them out of office before its to late. No civillians should be put into so much danger Because of 2 Idiots who have lead their two countries into an illigal war. . And now there are Innocent Men Women and Children killed or injured in Iran and Israel and those other countries who have allowed the USA and the UK to have military bases on those countries land. Which then drags them into a war that should not have started The attack on Gaza could have been stopped by the USA and the UK. But they both stood by and done nothing. While Innocent Palastinian Men Women and Children were also being killed.
Stop trying to virtue signal by mentioning that you ‘don’t agree with the theocratic state of Iran’. It is irrelevant at this stage. This is blatant imperialism. You either support Iran or you support the USA/Israel.
well written and the zionists out of Lebanon, Palestine and Syria; USA out of the Middle East.
I don’t think it’s appropriate to be echoing US and Israeli talking point about Iran’s “repressive and oppressive regime”. Isn’t it a bit like observing that a rape victim was immodestly dressed? Whether or not it’s true, it’s not called for.
Look, however harsh the rule of Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gadaffi was, it was nothing like as bad as the violence and chaos and destitution that Bush and Sarkozy and their friends so carelessly inflicted on the people of Iraq and Libya. However God judges Khamenei, I would guess that he will judge Trump and Netanyahu far more severely.
