For New Year, Israel bans major aid organisations from Gaza

On 29th December Israel decided to ban major aid organisations, including UNRWA  from working in Gaza with effect from 1st January! We publish the statement from the Head of UNRWA on the impact of this on any agencies seeking to work in support of international law as well as providing vital support for people in Gaza still suffering horrendously, suffering greatly exacerbated by Israel’s blocking of much of the aid agreed under the Trump “ceasefire” agreement including desperately needed shelter as worn tents are getting flooded and ripped to shreds in winter storms.

The physical destruction of Gaza since October 2023 and the distress and suffering of Gaza’s people has been visible on our screens whenever broadcast media bother to show it. But there is another less visible dimension of the destruction. Despite outages, Gaza had built a reasonably successful digital economy and the internet allowed Gazans contact with the world for education and contact with family in the West Bank and the diaspora and to share details of life under siege with the world.

Bringing up the Bodies

The 60 members of the Salem family are some of an estimated 10,000 Palestinians whose bodies remain trapped under the extensive rubble across the Gaza Strip. Due to two years of active Israeli bombardment, the targeting and killing of civil defense crews, and the lack of heavy duty machinery required to excavate the tons of concrete rubble, rescue missions in Gaza have been largely stalled.

But on December 15, the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip announced the start of a long recovery process of bodies that have remained under the rubble for two years. The operations are focused only on the areas in the Gaza Strip not actively being occupied by the Israeli military, which accounts for roughly half of the territory.

Status quo with Israel rather than accountability

In September, the European Union seemed poised to suspend trade agreements with Israel over its human rights violations in Gaza. In the United States, a record number of Democratic lawmakers began to support calls to limit weapons transfers to Israel. In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government issued a ban in August on sending weapons to Israel that could be used in Gaza, with Merz saying he was “profoundly concerned” for “the continued suffering of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.” By early October, however, with the enactment of President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan — which world leaders call a “ceasefire” or “peace plan,” despite ongoing Israeli violence in Gaza — such concern seemed to evaporate. Mounting international pressure was replaced with an eagerness from many governments, lawmakers, and institutions to return to the status quo.

Palantir – OK for the UK but not for Switzerland

Palantir has won several contracts with the UK government, despite its use by ICE in the USA to target people for deportation and its heinous role in creating kill lists for the Israeli military in Gaza and serious concerns about security, which is one reason UK MPs (including Labour MPs) are raising their concerns. As outlined by  the Palestine Solidarity Campaign “Palantir is a US-based surveillance company. As reported by Investigate, Palantir entered into a “strategic partnership” with Israel’s Ministry of Defense in 2024. It provides advanced AI tools to the Israeli military, enabling Israel’s attacks on Palestinians. The company has close ties with Israeli intelligence and supplies technology that facilitates mass surveillance and targeting of Palestinians.”
