Lies, damn lies, and statistics. How More in Common builds bias on Palestine and Israel into its research

Here Mandy Turner provides a forensic analysis of the bias in research on Israel/Palestine by “More In Common”. Its latest report is, she argues, riddled with skewed questions, unbalanced coverage, and biased framing. Israel’s rights are privileged and Zionism is given a sparkling makeover, whereas Palestinian rights are completely ignored in favour of a focus on Hamas. The squeaky-clean and neutral image projected by More in Common is what especially worries me about this report, because it is being quoted as an authoritative piece of research in media across the political spectrum – from The Independent and Arab News, to The Telegraph and the Daily Mail.

Alaa Abd el-Fattah belongs in Britain

Naomi Klein lays out why the Farage and Badenoch led mob are wrong to to demand the expulsion of human rights defender Abd el-Fatteh. His tweets were wrong but he has taken responsibility for them and offered a clear apology for them. This is in marked contrast to Farage who continues to deny his well-evidenced Nazi-embracing past.

Tweets are not unimportant but they are far less significant than his repeated non-violent actions in confronting repression in Egypt at the cost of his harsh provisionment and his record of defending the non-Muslim communities there.

What has Hamas done for the people of Gaza?

It is over two years since Hamas launched its 7th October assault on Israel and it  recently published its own assessment, called “Our Narrative… Al-Aqsa Flood: Two Years of Steadfastness and the Will for Liberation”, presenting the war as a “victory for resistance and steadfastness.”

Given the terrible havoc wreaked in Gaza and the horrendous callousness of Israel’s genocidal regime, it is understandable that outsiders will be cautious about ascribing any blame to Hamas.

But for veteran Ramallah-based reporter and staunch supporter of the Palestinian people, Amira Hass, accountability is essential.

Who won the war?

The Washington Institute is a US think tank, aiming “to advance a balanced and realistic understanding of American interests in the Middle East and to promote the policies that secure them.”

This assessment of the war on Gaza, by Robert Satloff, its Executive Director, makes for interesting reading with Satloff concluding: “Israel and Hamas both secured important benefits from the ceasefire. The answer to “who won the war” depends on the yardstick each defines for victory. The answer can legitimately be both. “

Gaza has changed us forever; onwards to justice

The livestreamed genocide cannot be unseen and things have changed; however justice for Palestinians is not guaranteed but opposing the genocide has radicalised millions who are noe looking at the world through the lens of what has been allowed to happen in Palestine. “Israel’s assaults on Gaza have shattered the pretense that its violence is episodic or defensive, exposing genocide as a structural feature of its settler-colonial project. For Palestinians, this moment reaffirms a longstanding truth: liberation cannot be secured through negotiation within an unjust system but requires confronting the structures that enact their dispossession and erasure.”

Israel’s “Zombie” economy

The state of Israel’s economy: “To make sense of these seemingly conflicting signals — surging markets alongside deepening social and economic turmoil — it is necessary to look beyond traditional indicators. Israeli economic researcher and BDS activist Shir Hever argues that Israel is now operating in what he calls a “zombie economy,” one kept moving through massive military expenditure, foreign credit, and political denial.”
