Why Washington is not stopping Israel

Much of the world is watching in utter bemusement and horror as the US government, with the UK and most of Europe trailing in its wake, indulges in public hand-wringing over Palestinian deaths and emotes about the terrible threat of regional escalation – but does nothing to stop either.

Will Israel’s impunity never end? Are there no red lines it can cross that will result in its backers in Washington calling a halt?

In this interview with former Israeli negotiator Daniel Levy, +972 Magazine and Local Call offer an insight into the tortuous interaction between different drivers influencing US policymakers. Yes, there are shifts occurring in American politics and society vis-a-vis Israel, but we need to temper expectations around the likelihood of a dramatic policy change any time soon.

Ultimately, Levy says, “America is not the friend of peace in the Middle East, but an enemy.”
