Here he appraises Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the joint session of Congress on 24th July 2024.

After all the lies and bombast, substance was thin.

For all his bluster, it is clear that Netanyahu has severely damaged bipartisan support for Israel, built up tirelessly over decades by American pro-Israel lobbying groups.

Plitnick assesses the balance of forces in both parties which are internally less united on Israel than they have been. Possibilities for pro-Palestinian advocacy are opening up, particularly among the Democrats.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s call for continued support for the Gaza genocide may have received rapturous applause from Congress, but the speech revealed uncertain political terrain for Israel among both Democrats and Republicans.
