The Starmer led government’s culpability over Gaza

JVL Introduction

As the Israeli Parliament voted to occupy the whole of Gaza and push Palestinians into a minute enclave within what was already a tiny enclave, more and more people are waking up to the fact that Israel’s actions totally lack justification.  Yesterday’s Financial Times’ editorial noted that “the US and European countries that tout Israel as an ally that shared their values have issued barely a word of condemnation. They should be ashamed of their silence, and stop enabling Netanyahu to act with impunity.”

Meanwhile the UK and far too many other governments continue rather than stop enabling ” Netanyahu to act with impunity” not least with provision of arms – and surveillance flights – long into this genocide, which they still do not call a genocide.  The sale of arms, even after the suspension of shipments that could be used in Gaza, is being challenged in the High Court as this article shows.  It may interest and surprise some to know that even Margaret Thatcher imposed an arms embargo on Israel because of Lebanon, which lasted for twelve years, and even Tony Blair (albeit very quietly) imposed an arms embargo during the second Intifada (see this Middle East Eye piece from September 2024); but Starmer has followed Sunak’s lead in continuing to support Israel even as things got worse and worse and it became absolutely clear what Israel’s real agenda is.

  • This all demonstrates three things: 1) that Israel is now out of anybody’s control, and will continue with its disastrous and disgusting policies whatever any-one now says or does; 2) that Starmer’s Labour government has lost all sense of morality and ethics having chosen to walk all over the loyalty of its many erstwhile supporters; and 3) in the light of the latest Parliamentary debate on the subject of Israel, nobody in Parliament deserves an apology from the whole political establishment more than does Jeremy Corbyn.

  • Harrowing, heart-breaking and unbelievably shameful misconduct by the UK government.

I’ve asked my MP to join with other MPs in holding Lammy and Starmer to account. There are two options only, I think – either they knowingly and repeatedly lied to parliament; or they were so incompetent at running their offices they didn’t know what was happening.
