The stranglehold of “the lobby” in the US

As the claim that Israel dragged the US into war, supported enthusiastically by Aipac and the rest of the Israel lobby, MJ Rosenberg does well to point out that “American Jews remain, in broad outline, what they have long been: perhaps the most consistently progressive constituency in the United States.”

Quite simply, as he demonstrates convincingly, the lobby does not represent the Jews it purports to speak for.

The mismatch is now profound. Aipac, the leader of the pack, is in no way representative. It is run by a board of ultra-wealthy Republicans. It has largely Orthodox support.

Orthodox Jews are also overwhelmingly Republican but make up only 10% of the Jewish population.

American Jews on the whole are overwhelmingly – 75-85% -Democrat.

So who is the lobby speaking for?

“Groups like AIPAC, the ADL, the Conference of Presidents, and the rest of the polished war machinery present themselves as the authentic voice of American Jewry. In reality, they represent a narrow institutional world of donors, operatives, careerists, and professional loyalists whose job is to maintain the fiction that support for Jews requires support for whatever Israel does.”
