I told you so, Israel “supporters”

JVL Introduction

There is more than a hint of schadenfreude in this delightful piece by US commentator MJ Rosenberg.

We sympathise, having shared with him the experience of being in the wilderness for so long on the question of Israel, watching helplessly as the various establishments – both Jewish and national, in Britain, the States and elsewhere – simply thought their uncritical support for Israel was unchallengeable, destined to last forever.

Well the times they are a-changin’.

Rosenberg can’t help rubbing it in as the once impregnable US-Israel alliance comes apart at the seams:

“You killed Zionism, and unless you give up on the whole idea and join the rest of the world… in support of one democratic state with equal rights for all, you will destroy every accomplishment and institution that Jews built in Palestine over the last 100 years.”

this is this week’s Times of Israel online edition OP-ED by founder and Editor David Horovitz. He doesn’t normally turn to the Scriptures for inspiration – but needs must when the Devil (Netanyahu) drives:
    — Micah 3:9–12. Translation from Tanakh: The Holy Scriptures (Jewish Publication Society, 1985), via Sefaria
“Hear this, you rulers of the House of Jacob, You chiefs of the House of Israel, Who detest justice And make crooked all that is straight, Who build Zion with crime, Jerusalem with iniquity!
Her rulers judge for gifts, Her priests give rulings for a fee, And her prophets divine for pay; Yet they rely upon GOD, saying, “GOD is in our midst; No calamity shall overtake us.”
Assuredly, because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins And the Temple Mount a shrine in the woods.”
The rest of the copy is ‘on the money’. Good stuff. Mr Horovitz writes well. I’ll forgive him for quoting a passage from Micah which bizarrely casts ‘plowed [sic] as a field’ as a destructive/negative metaphor. I’ve spent many happy years ploughing fields… with draft oxen (in Norwich, and in sub-Saharan Africa) and loved every minute of it. To the point, even more surreally, the twelfth and last contribution [pp 214-234] in ZIONISM AND THE JEWISH FUTURE (1916 edited by H. Sacher) with which I’m sure you all are familiar is entitled THE NEW JEW: A Sketch by no less a luminary than Nahum Sokolow. It is the tale of an apocryphal young Jew who was ‘a bochur in a class by himself’ He spends years wandering in search of ‘knowledge’ ‘truth’ but – to cut a longish story short… he finally finds a ‘space’ (as we would say these days) where he felt at one with himself. (stopped at the permitted 300 words Ed)

  • [… where he felt at one with himself]. And that was ploughing the land. Not with John Deere! What happened to that spirit, to the Weltanschauung of Meir the smallholder farmer? Today’s ‘settlers’ in the OWB are emphatically not cut from the same cloth.
Finally, one sentence caught my eye in Mr Horowitz’s otherwise commendable cri de coeur: “It took 2,000 years… for the Jews to be granted their right to return and reassert sovereignty in our ancient homeland.”
Until the Jews acknowledge that they actually don’t have an inalienable ‘right’ to pick up the reins after two millennia ‘out of power’ and blithely say to the ‘existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine’ if they say anything at all – ‘Yalla’ the landlords are back. There’s the rub
