A death camp denser than Srebenica

JVL Introduction

The Srebrenica massacre in which 8,000 Muslim men and boys were murdered is, rightly, acknowledged as a genocide. “The Srebrenica genocide serves as a clear historical warning about the deadly impact of besieging civilians and depriving them of protection and essentials for life, particularly when these actions are part of systematic behaviour that is a core component of ongoing genocide, as seen in Gaza.”

As the picture above shows, Israel killing Palestinians has continued since the so called, with at least 1,000 killed but the genocide continues in so many other ways. No resources for reconstruction, many denied access to potentially life saving medical care; Israel is not even allowing desperately needed rat poison into Gaza.

Furthermore, Israel is cramming the people of Gaza into an ever smaller amount of land. To compare, the people of Gaza is now crammed into an area smaller than Srebrenica – “but with a population over 50 times larger and a density roughly 60 times higher, all amidst rubble, waste, and a severe lack of basic living conditions.”

This article not only outlines some of the dreadful conditions in which Gazans are forced to live but also clear demands on the international community, especially on those who have signed the Geneva Conventions.  The most obvious requirement is for sanctions. The dehumanisation of Palestinians, the ongoing genocide and the impunity must end, tut-tutting is very far from enough.

Even if some governments await the outcome of the ICJ decision on whether this is a genocide (it is not least according to every human rights organisation, incluiding Israeli ones) there is a legal duty to “prevent it becoming” a genocide and so the demands outlined in this EuroMed piece are the minimum required.
