Revolt in the universities

JVL Introduction

Chris Hedges extols the moral and physical courage of the students on US campuses protesting against the war on Gaza, “a potent counterpoint to the moral bankruptcy that surrounds them”.

For, while no president of any American university has spoken out against the destruction of every university in Gaza or called for sanctions against Israel, they are rushing to throw their student activists under the bus.

Beholden to their wealthy donors, university administrations seem to care only about the alleged harm that Jewish students experience when their colleagues (including large numbers of Jews) protest about Israel’s genocidal actions.

Here Hedges focuses on the protest at Princeton and the ugly betrayal of its students as police are rushed in to make arrests and to destroy a protest encampment as soon as it began.

Revolt in the universities

University students across the country, facing mass arrests, suspensions, evictions and explusions are our last, best hope to halt the genocide in Gaza.

  • I’ve also seen some shocking videos today of the brutality of the Atlanta PD – brought in by the university management – towards students and professors on the Emory campus.

A black student on the ground already handcuffed but gratuitously tasered. (An eyewitness alleged black people were being targetted…) A female professor trying to reason with a police officer flung to the ground and handcuffed…

Absolute shame on the presidents and professors who are condoning both genocide and brutality on their own campus. I’m old enough to remember Kent State and the shocking events there. Lessons never seem to be learned. Another shameful time for the US. (And of course the rest of the Israeli enablers in the western world)

My heart goes out to all those wonderful young people standing up against injustice.

  • Thank you Chris for your brave and on-the-nose reporting, podcasting and public speaking. Academe here in the UK too has long rented itself to the highest bidders, and our students seem more cowed than yours. Keep it coming, all of you.
