JVL Introduction

This latest issue of  The Wire, e-newletter of Jewish Voice for Peace reposted here, deals with a number of themes including the fact that large numbers of Jews, protested on 23rd April, in prayer and song for a “Seder in the streets”, against the Senate vote to send over $14 billion more to the Israeli military.

  • Meanwhile in Germany, as Jewish protestors at the peace camp outside the Reichstag building celebrated Pesach, restrictions took an almost incredible turn. After banning the singing of Irish protests songs in Gaelic, the Berlin police banned speeches in Hebrew!
The police have claimed that they cannot allow the use of languages they do not understand in case there are illegal statements or incitements to violence. Some Irish protestors have apparently been charged with public order offences for defying the ban.
Although the ban on Hebrew was lifted for religious ceremonies including Pesach, it otherwise remains in force. So in the name of combatting antisemitism and supporting Israel, the Berlin authorities have prohibited the public use of the Hebrew language.
And they say the Germans don’t have a sense of humour!
