Judith Butler will not co-sign Israel’s alibi for genocide
JVL Introduction
Interviewers Jeremy Scahill and Murtaza Hussain of the Intercept begin by talking about the current political situation in Israel and the Middle-East and the significance of rumours that the ICJ might issue warrants against senior Israeli officials.
They then move on to the meat of this post, an interview with philosopher Judith Butler, who has been excoriated, particularly in Germany, for giving succour to Hamas, by refusing to condemn Hamas as “terrorist”.
In this extended interview Butler, after commenting at length and in very intersting ways on the current student protests in the States, expands on her views of Hamas:
“I still don’t like Hamas. I don’t endorse Hamas. I have never applauded or rejoiced in the military tactics of Hamas.”
She explains that Hamas didn’t come from nowhere and that its struggle for justice, freedom, or equality needs to be contextualised and cannot be reduced to an antisemitic hate of all Jews.
“to say that their struggle for justice, freedom, or equality is, at core, just antisemitism, or mainly antisemitism, is to assume that they would be happier if they were colonized by some other group of people. They’re only objecting to being colonized by the Jews because they’re the Jews.Well, no, that’s not right.
“They’re objecting to colonization.”

“…. but his own political future inside Israel, because the second the war ends, he’s going to be in serious political and legal trouble with Israelis and continuing [the war] longer prevents that.”
Yes, and I fear that Netanyahu knowing this(probably the basic reason for the savage attack on Gaza), will already have some other group/country in mind to attack/invade primarily to avoid court and hence jail for as long as possible.
