Prof. Amos Goldberg: “Yes, it is genocide”

JVL Introduction

Amos Goldberg, professor of Holocaust History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, wrote the following article about the situation in Gaza for an Israeli online magazine.

It is addressed to Israelis, explaining that just because what is happening in Gaza doesn’t look like the Holocaust – with its trains, gas chambers, incinerators, killing pits, concentration and extermination camps and more – doesn’t mean it is not a genocide.

Nor does the fact that the perpetrators say they are acting in self-defence lessen the crime they are committing.

Don’t just look at genocide though legal eyes where it will take the ICJ some years to declare its verdict. Look at what we can see happening: the level and pace of the indiscriminate killing, the destruction, the mass deportations, the displacement, the starvation, the executions, the elimination of cultural and religious institutions, the crushing of the elites (including the killing of journalists), and the sweeping dehumanization of the Palestinians.

For Goldberg this undoubtedly  creates “an overall picture of genocide, of intentional and conscious crushing of the Palestinian existence in Gaza”.

  • Definitely deliberate Ethnic Cleansing, the Leaders of the state have not been shy in publicly announcing their genocidal intent and that is exactly what is happening.

  • A Brave Man to speak out in this way in Israel which has prosecuted and imprisoned others who have dared to say what seems to be the unspeakable.
I keep saying to myself that I should read, and say less, on the genocide that is happening in Palestine, both Gaza and the West Bank, which is largly ignored given the scale of the Holocaust that is being perpetrated on the Palestinians, by people who should know better. The effects on my tinitus are enormous so it must raise my blood pressure. The comments in the article add to the catalogue of documentation on the genocide and yet. The one thing that shouts out of the cacophany louder than anything else is the term ” ethnic cleansing.” There is nothing clean about killing. Nothing ! The term demotes the action of taking the life of another human being, in the same way as using dehumanising language always has, no matter what ethnicity. Ethnic Destruction would be a more accurate and fitting term in my view. Ethnic Elimination has more of a soundbite, but I feel does not carry the gravity of the word destruction when applied to a distinct group of people. If anyone can think of a better term than Ethnic destruction I should be grateful for the opportunity of a campaign to bring an end to the language that attempts to make the killing of a people seem like clearing up the back yard.

  • This report of the Sde Teiman concentration camp needs to be publicised far more widely. Would C4 News do it? Meanwhile, please can JVL reprint the CNN report as an article, because so far it has only been a link in the Comments section above.
