How Israel made the occupation taboo in schools

JVL Introduction

Adi Adamit-Gorstein writes about her experience in the Israeli school system – that she never heard the word “occupation” once.

But be careful if you criticize Israel for this. It might count as antisemitism!

For, according to the IHRA definition it is all right to subject Israel to criticism that  is “similar to that levelled against any other country”.

But what country is one supposed to compare Israel and its occupation with?

  • An option would be to compare the annexation of Palestine with the invasion, annexation and exploitation the indigenous people of the Northern America inclusive of Mexico suffered at the hands of the English, French and Spanish. Do you think that is okay and will not get me into trouble?

  • So It is OK to compare Israel to other countries occupations of other countries. How about I compare Israel with Germany, occupying Austria Austria was annexed early in the German push for more land. This was justified by the claim that Germany had previously been rulers of Austria. Or Belgium, or France maybe because they opposed Germany’s occupation of Austria and the persecution of the Jews

  • As a long serving Labour member I shall criticize Israels treatment of the Palestinians come what may. I should not have to be wary of doing so..

  • Cancel culture writ large. It’s as if Palestinians are just a damn inconvenience. If only they would go away. We know they exist but we must stick our heads in the sand while our government cleanses them from the land that is ours. This is a sad state of affairs. The Israeli right are literally polluting the minds of its Jewish citizens to believe it’s OK to deny the folly of what has and continues to be unleashed on the Palestinians to achieve an ethnocratic state for Jews in the Middle East.

  • Thank you for this. I’m looking for suitable resources to introduce into a UK religious cheder attended by children aged 5 – 12 that would give the Palestinian side of the story as well as the Jewish/Israeli side. Can you suggest anything, or point me to someone/organisations that can?
