UK ‘seeking to block ICJ ruling’ on Israeli occupation of Palestine

JVL Introduction

The UN General Assembly in December last year called on the International Court of Justice to investigate the “legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory”.

The ICJ has until October to decide if it will take the case.

The UK government is arguing against such an investigation, according to a document seen by the Guardian.

The arguments advanced for not investigating are, frankly, pathetic –ignoring the rapidly deteriorating situation, the entrenched reality of the occupation and the moves towards annexation, in effect saying leave it all to a non-existent “peace process”.

We await a strong reaction from the Labour opposition against this attempt to obstruct a definitive judgment on the illegality of a 56-year-old-and-counting occupation that by definition was supposed to be temporary.

UK ‘seeking to block ICJ ruling’ on Israeli occupation of Palestine

Dismay over UK statement that opposes hearing altogether and is accused of ignoring significant facts

  • How can a proud ‘Zionist without qualifications’ not support the government? I suspect a deafening silence as has been the case in relation to so many attacks of all kinds against Palestinians.

  • QUOTE: “… ICC rulings are only binding for states that recognise its jurisdiction, which Israel does not” …

……. Just like USA and Ukraine.
It appears that the ICC is effective when investigating alleged human rights abuses by Serbia or the Russian Federation.
Much less-so for a number of countries who are not signatories
    [the usual suspects !]
