Amnesty International confirms it is genocide in Gaza

JVL Introduction

Amnesty’s new report leaves no doubt that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Its findings are based on detailed reports of Israel’s actions in Gaza, over 200 interviews and careful review of statements made by leading Israeli politicians and soldiers. It set this evidence against the 1948 Genocide Convention prohibited acts and in particular: “killing members of the group”; “causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group”; and “deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part”. Amnesty examined whether Israel committed these acts with the specific “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, [the] group, as such”.

The conclusions are damning, “following 7 October 2023, Israel committed and is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.”

Amnesty calls on the UK and all other states “must not render aid or assistance in maintaining the unlawful situation created by Israel’s continued occupation of the OPT, reinforced through apartheid.” The UK and all other states “must immediately suspend the direct and indirect supply, sale or transfer, to Israel of all weapons and other military equipment, and stop the provision of training and other military and security assistance.”
