Amnesty International confirms it is genocide in Gaza
JVL Introduction
Amnesty’s new report leaves no doubt that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Its findings are based on detailed reports of Israel’s actions in Gaza, over 200 interviews and careful review of statements made by leading Israeli politicians and soldiers. It set this evidence against the 1948 Genocide Convention prohibited acts and in particular: “killing members of the group”; “causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group”; and “deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part”. Amnesty examined whether Israel committed these acts with the specific “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, [the] group, as such”.
The conclusions are damning, “following 7 October 2023, Israel committed and is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.”
Amnesty calls on the UK and all other states “must not render aid or assistance in maintaining the unlawful situation created by Israel’s continued occupation of the OPT, reinforced through apartheid.” The UK and all other states “must immediately suspend the direct and indirect supply, sale or transfer, to Israel of all weapons and other military equipment, and stop the provision of training and other military and security assistance.”

The Guardian’s headline today :
“Israel’s war in Gaza amounts to genocide Amnesty International finds”
The usual mealy mouthed Guardian – “amounts to genocide”. Just cannot bring themselves to say “Israel’s war in Gaza is genocide”….
Regardless of your views on the Guardian the phraseology is Amnesty’s not theirs
“It [the Amnesty investigation] assesses them within the framework of genocide under international law to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support a conclusion that Israel’s conduct in Gaza following 7 October 2023 amounts to genocide.”
Thank you for that Mike Cushman, I stand corrected. I obviously didn’t read it properly….
The use of language to make a solid straightforward statement is there but when you read statements like the Amnesty one, you feel that it’s weak.
It would have more impact if it was blunt and left no way that it could be manipulated.
If it said, Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to Genocide and is likely to go down in history, that Israel created its own Holocaust.
Dropping well over 85.000 tons of Bombs and Missiles on Gaza, murdering around 200.000 innocent Palestinians, the majority still buried under the rubble.
What Amnesty said and the Guardian repeated, to my mind isn’t even close to what Israel has actually done.
Whichever way it is viewed, the terrorist state of Israel’s long time oppression, dispossession and regular mass murder of the indigenous people is genocide.
Have just done a page search of the Guardian’s article and the word ‘amounts’ appears only in the title and NOT directly in quotation marks from Amnesty, so the paper would appear to be attempting to dilute the effect of the report Amnesty’s two briefing pages on the report from 5 Dec are
“Amnesty International investigation concludes Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza” (which is reproduced here) &
“Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territory: ‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman’: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza”.
The only Amnesty page that uses this word ‘amounts’ is about the banning of UNWAR.
Of the Amnesty report Reuters uses the word “says” as does AP News. The New York Times and the BBC are even more craven than the Guardian use the word ‘accuses’ to refer to the 259-page report.

“Israel/OPT: Law to ban UNRWA amounts to criminalization of humanitarian aid”

We are all clear that it is a genocide, but for legal and judicial purposes do we not have to wait until the ICJ eventually issues its judgment on South Africa’s case? Which could sadly take years.
