Joe Sacco: War On Gaza

JVL Introduction

Joe Sacco is a graphic novelist and more. He has now published “War On Gaza” which you can buy here .  Here is he interviewed by an Israeli journalist who recalls learning a great deal from Sacco’s comic  series “Palestine” published in the 1990s and collected into a book published in 2001.

He was compelled to create “War On Gaza” from an exchange with a friend in Gaza.  He makes no apology for referencing the Nazis and in response to a question about connection with traditional superhero theme with all-powerful villains, he replied:  “No, I didn’t think about superheroes. I seldom think of superheroes or supervillains. I just see sociopaths with a hell of a lot of power at their disposal.”
Sacco blames the Americans as well as the Israelis and we know that the UK and many other (mainly western) countries, must also accept culpability.

  • “War” implies that Palestinians have or had something to counter Zionist Israeli army, artillery and tanks; it’s navy and it’s air force. It is also an inappropriate word to describe ethnic cleansing and genocide.

  • Reading the article in Haaretz inspired me to purchase the booklet. Pleased to have done so. Joe’s work reminds me of Eli Valley’s.
