Was Carter the best Ex President of the USA? (1)
JVL Introduction
Ex President Carter’s death has brought a cavalcade of acknowledgement and praise for his humanity, most of which is well deserved when considering his post Presidential life; however, as Chris Hedges says here: “”Carter had a decency most politicians lack, but his moral crusades, which came once he was out of power, seem like a form of penance. His record as president is bloody and dismal, although not as bloody and dismal as the presidents who followed. That’s the best we can say of him.”
Hedges covers his lamentable domestic record, eg deregulation of many major industries as well as his foreign policy record, eg on the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks and, of course, on Israel and Palestine with an important reference to the exclusion of the PLO from the Camp David talks and the failure to have any guarantees or methods of accountability from Israel. Carter’s record on this and much more on his role vis a via Israel and Palestine is explored more fully in Part 2 here.
