Even wars have rules: Israel is breaking them
JVL Introduction
Jeremy Bowen has talked with the International Committee of the Red Cross and other legal experts who are clear that laws are being broken by Israel, even if you (ludicrously) take October 7th as the starting point. Hamas and others committed war crimes on October 7th 2023 when civilians were attacked, killed or kidnapped. Since then Israel has committed countless war crimes including genocide.
There is much important and devastating information in this piece on the BBC website. The very experienced Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council and former UN humanitarian chief said: “I’m shaken to my core; I haven’t seen a population like this being so trapped for such a long period of time in such a small, besieged area. Indiscriminate bombardment, denied journalism, denied healthcare.”
There will be a day for accountability; but all must remember the system that has given rise to this. It is not just about this Israeli government but all that have gone before implementing the country’s brutal occupation on the Palestinian people – and those who have been supporting Israel and are complicit.

Even wars have rules. They don’t stop soldiers killing each other but they’re intended to make sure that civilians caught up in the fighting are treated humanely and protected from as much danger as possible. The rules apply equally to all sides.
