After the “time of monsters” – what next for Israel and Palestine?

The war is not over in Gaza – now there must be justice

The war is not over and will not be over without justice. While Israel is allowed the continue its occupation of the West Bank to still be in control of Gaza’s borders and 58% of its land, while the western states that have belatedly recognised the State of Palestine insist that it is demilitarised without calling for the same condition for Israel, peace looks a lot like subjugation.

The BBC, Bob Vylan and THAT chant!

What did Bob Vylan actually mean by the chant “Death, Death to the IDF” at Glastonbury this summer? He has been vilified, his planned performances in the USA stopped as a result and he has been condemned, predictably, by the Chief Rabbi and by Keir Starmer. There is a link to the podcast in the intro and a note that the major sponsor has withdrawn their support.

Nothing to Return To

A poignant personal and yet near ubiquitous story from Gaza by a teacher and writer in Gaza. As people are displaced they are walking among rubble, when they reach areas they knew well, that were vibrant with fruit trees or with commercial life, there is nothing by which to orientate yourselves.

Is AIPAC support becoming toxic?

It is definitely too early to suggest that AIPAC influence is no more or even seriously on the wane but some Democrats are publicly rejecting AIPAC support and even returning funds.  More and more US citizens are questioning their role and the constant backing of Israel – or at least this farthest of far right governments.

Annexing the West Bank would annoy the USA!

Israel’s parliament voting to annex the West Bank is maybe a step too far even for Trump! Trump, Rubio and Vance are furious about this. Trump is clear that there would ne no annexation “because I gave my word to the Arab countries.”  He also said that “Israel would lose all of its support from the United States if that happened,” 

The Gaza “ceasefire” and British complicity

A thorough and furious assessment of much of the horrors meted out to Gaza by Israel and the British media’s complicity from its use of language, eg Israeli hostages and Palestinians prisoners (and more recently “and detainees”) to the coverage given to us knowing something about the Israeli hostages and few, if any, personal stories about Palestinians who are reduced to crowds and victims. Like always looking through Alice’s Looking Glass rather than through an objective, journalistic lens.

Palestine Solidarity has changed Britain: and there is more work to do

The Palestine solidarity movement has been solid and strengthening over the past two years and this has had a long term impact on Britain but: his is not victory. It is promising momentum that has shifted the conversation and produced concrete change. Yet, Gaza’s suffering continues, and international accountability remains incomplete. Broad coalitions must guard against fragmentation, movements must institutionalise gains into durable legal, political and economic pressure points, and defenders of civil liberties must ensure the space for dissent is not eroded by repression.”
