The pogrom is the point

JVL Introduction

Sunday, 26th February 2023 saw a pogrom take place in the Palestinian town of Huwara, near Nablus on the West Bank.

The Guardian report’s standfirst to their report ‘Never like this before’: settler violence in West Bank escalates reads “Retaliatory rampage in Palestinian village likened to ‘Kristallnacht in Huwara’ with one dead and 350 injured”.

The headline to Gideon Levy’s Haaretz is a chilling “Israeli Settlers’ Hawara Pogrom Was a Preview of Sabra and Chatila 2” (a reference to the Maronite Christian Lebanese massacre of Palestinians in 1982, brokered by Israel  at the time).

Orly Noy is chair of B’Tselem’s executive board and we repost her evaluation of these events for +972 Magazine in which she writes:

Remember the history of pogroms against the Jews of Eastern Europe and weep…

The pogrom is the point

When Israeli officials call on settlers not to take the law into their own hands against Palestinians, they are actually saying ‘let the army do the job for you.’
