It is convenient for ‘liberal’ apologists for Israel’s continued and blatant criminal behaviour to claim that it is all the responsibility of Netanyahu and his far-right allies. They declare that Israel is still the moral state of their imagination: the ‘only democracy in the Middle East’. This article demonstrates that the tyranny of the leadership is a fair reflection of their Jewish electorate with two thirds opposing criminal prosecution of the soldiers accused of torture at Sdi Teiman. Channel 4 News broadcast a difficult to watch item on the systemic use of torture on 19 August.
Oher polls show that support for Netanyahu which had been withering is now rebuilding and that almost 90% of Jewish Israelis trust their army despite continuing evidence of random killing, widespread abuse and looting. Claims that it is ‘The Most Moral Army’ have always been specious and this continued tolerance of its actions are an insult to its daily growing number of victims.

The majority of Israelis seem to believe that the Palestinians deserve the continuing punishment, bombing indiscriminately (all Palestinians are guilty); and torturing any captured Palestinians. How does this differ from what the nazis did to the jews? It’s a different time, a superficially different context, but ultimately it is dehumanising all Palestinians – as just “human animals”
Worse, virtually no Israeli bothers to equate the belligerent rape of the non-Jews in their prisons with the evils perpetrated by the notorious people of Sodom and Gomorrah whose account is prominent in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament.
