In this article in openDemocracy Paul Rogers reflects on the influence of the war on Gaza in mobilising opposition, not just in the US and UK but far more broadly.
For decades autocratic regimes in North Africa and the Middle East have been able to encourage publics to deflect their anger at their own oppression against Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians.
After October 7, some protests were actually encouraged, but authorities generally have clamped down on demonstrations, fearing they might turn against themselves.
Successful until now, there is clear concern that an Israeli assault on Rafah can once again provoke mobilisations that might not be so easy to control…

Very thorough article yet the words ” violent attack by Hamas ” rather whitewash the fact it was RETALIATION by Hamas after years of escalating violence & land theft by Israel. And its only quibble with Starmer being his failure of meaningful criticism of Israel ” when in fact he’s been quite clear about his total support for Israel inc the deliberate Starvation & withholding water from Palestinians is the fact of the matter..and then there’s the word ceasefire. The sham of the 2021 ” ceasefire ” after Naftali Bennett had slammed Palestinians after another act of RETALIATION against his regimes ESCALATING violence against Palestinians. A sham ‘ ceasefire ‘ where global media looked away as Israel CONTINUED to kill Palestinians & evict West Bank villagers & farmers from their homes.. Still the narrative of Palestinians as aggressors . The author even uses Israeli DEFENCE force to describe the OCCUPYING force of Israel..
