Israel’s annexation plan is legalising illegality

JVL Introduction

The plan “to impose Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria” is gathering momentum.

We have posted many pieces describing the Palestinian experience of creeping annexation in the West Bank, as so powerfully recorded in the film No Other Land and ITV’s documentary ‘Our Land’, which Middle East Eye described as “laying bare the fanaticism of the Israeli settler movement”.  (It will be interesting to see how Louis Theroux handles it in a programme due to be screened on BBC2 on April 27.)

The article from Ha’aretz we publish below is important for what it reveals about the work of the defence ministry’s “settlement administration” and its deliberate, planned infringements of international law, and Israel’s own previous laws, facilitating the ongoing annexation of the West Bank through dispossession and expulsion.

It quotes the executive director of the Yesh Din human rights organization: “annexation is not galloping or crawling, it is already here.”

Legislation, Land Grabs Point to Expedited Israeli Annexation in the West Bank

  • There’s an “end of times” feel to the Israeli government’s behaviour … more and more “Final Solution” utter ghastliness from key ministers bumping up against slowly reducing buy-in from the many different stakeholders outside and inside Israel who have kept them in power.

“New York Times” ran a long article yesterday about the (still miniscule) changes in the Israeli public’s mindset about the morality of Israel’s actions in Gaza. The incredibly brave Israeli women holding up signs of dead Palestinian children and saying shiva for them in Tel Aviv demonstrations said the number of Israelis attending these had gone up from 10 to 200 in weeks; also passers-by were engaging more with them. It’s a welcome change of heart for the “New York Times” to run such an article, one that will hopefully encourage more American and Israeli Jewish families to support the Tel Aviv demonstrators.
