A call to back candidates supported by Collective left umbrella

JVL Introduction

Perspectives on the general election (15)

Like JVL, Rachel Swindon is not in the business of supporting political parties vying for our votes in the general election on July 4.

However she argues in this article for Canary that there are candidates standing under the umbrella of the Collective who deserve consideration.

She lists 17 candidates standing as independents or for small parties, some well-known like Jeremy Corbyn, Andrew Feinstein and Pamela Fitzpatrick, others less so. She provides details of each one including how to sign up and support their campaigns.

Hope has a new home

Perspectives on the general election (15)
Sure, you’ve heard it all before. A new left movement that is going to rise from the ashes of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party and take the ‘collective’ fight to the elitist warmongering duopoly in the general election – fielding independent candidates. You were told these new movements and parties would stand candidates here, there, and everywhere, and how every decision from major policy to what brand of tea bag the movement ‘leader’ should use would all be decided internally and democratically. You were told a load of old nonsense, to be honest, and invariably your hopes were shattered and your activism was exploited for someone else’s vanity project.

  • Useful. But not a definitive list of Left Independents.
Can I take this opportunity to promote Charmaine Morgan, who is a former Labour councillor and parliamentary candidate now an Independent councillor and standing for the Lincolnshire Independents in Grantham and Bourne.

    • Faiza Shaheen is not standing as part of the Collective which is why she is not in this article but we have certainly not forgotten her and how she was treated.

  • You read what these candidates say and you can’t help getting a buzz, it reminded of the time when Jeremy was voted in as Leader. I still feel angry about what the Rightwing PLP MPs did to stop Corbyn from becoming PM and it hurts. If all these and other Left/Socialist MPs win, it will give us a boost of confidence that Socialism can return and be a strong challenge at the next election in 5 years time.
I cannot believe that Starmer’s Labour Party is going to turn the lives of the Working Class around and give him a second term, the Tories are likely to still be hated for their 14 years of Austerity and the People will be looking for a Socialist Government to improve their lives.

  • We have Nandita Lal in Tottenham – an independent socialist and strong supporter of Palestinian rights. She lives in Tottenham and works for a environmental NGO. Supported by Fiona Lali and Barnaby Raine at recent local meeting.

  • Jo Bird, Liverpool Birkenhead is in the Collective but has not made it to this list. She is the only Collective candidate standing for the Green Party AFAIK.

Birmingham is well covered and although he is not on the Collective list Birmingham Yardley candidate Jody McIntyre standing against Jess Phillips deserves a mention.

  • How come jvl havent mentioned Halima Khan ? She might not be in ‘we are collective’ but she’s still a decent independent candidate, and I think might have been standing before Fiona, in which case, shouldn’t Fiona do the right thing and step down, rather than risk splitting the vote?
