Western double standards exposed by the war on Ukraine

JVL Introduction

This is the Mondoweiss introduction to the statement that we are pleased to share from the Palestine Boycott National Committee who call for solidarity with the people of Ukraine and an end to the double standards.  “The Western double standard when it comes to the Russian invasion of Ukraine is painful, enraging, and humiliating for people in the Global South, including for Palestinians. In addition to the hypocrisy, the speed with which all these Western-dominated entities boycotted, expelled or otherwise sanctioned Russia and ordinary Russians, only days after its invasion of Ukraine, sends a clearly racist message to Palestinians, Yemenis, Iraqis, Afghanis and many others, that our lives and rights as people of colour do not count. Ironically, these acts and the statements that justify them also effectively demolish almost all the anti-BDS excuses propagated by Israel and its anti-Palestinian apologists in the West against us over 17 years to thwart our calls for accountability and justice.” (Mondoweiss)

West’s response to Russian invasion demolishes excuses for rejecting BDS against Apartheid Israel

The Western campaign to boycott and sanction Russia has effectively demolished almost all the anti-BDS excuses propagated by Israel and its anti-Palestinian apologists meant to thwart Palestinian calls for accountability and justice.

  • The West or members of NATO are a strange group of nations making a lot of noise about freedom and justice. Since World War II they have been at war somewhere in the world and whilst they have been in charge there has been no peace.

    • Zelensky may be the President but he is not all of Ukraine – and this crisis in Ukraine may well help to expose western hypocrisy and open up more possibilities to speak about Palestine.

  • Well said. I completely agree that sanctions should target iniquitous regimes on the basis of their crimes and not innocent individuals on the basis of their nationality or descent.

  • An interesting case of double standards today from the Guardian’s Jonathan Freedland, who describes the pain suffered by his family as a result of the V2 bombing of London. The event, he writes, “opened up deep reservoirs of empathy for the sufferings of others.” Those others include, as we might expect, the people of Ukraine; the sufferings of the people of Gaza do not even rate a mention. There are blind spots in every heart, but it is relatively rare to see functioning hearts that accommodate bombed-out craters the size of a small country.

  • Reading the Observer, you would not think that it was one of the biggest cheerleaders for the invasion of Iraq.

  • The worst culprit for me is the BBC, every New programme they have gone into minute detail of Russian aggression, not once did they mention the Nazis in Ukraine that have killed Ukrainian Russian speakers. I’ve posted on FB and Twitter many times, “Hello BBC, this has been happening in Palestine for decades, yet we’ve never seen a single BBC journalist in Palestine”???
