On the Trump Plan – 2
JVL Introduction
We welcomed what we could of the Trump Plan in our introduction to the previous post here.
In this parallel post, Tony Karon in his Rootless Cosmopolitan blog, casts a further jaundiced eye over what is likely to transpire.
AS he argues:
“There are myriad reasons to suspect (and few reasons to doubt) that once they’ve recovered their captives, the Israelis will resume counterinsurgency violence in Gaza. The only restraint on Israel is what President Trump will permit.”
He argues further that, for example:
- “To the extent that Israel retains any control over Gaza, the “peace plan” is simply a shift in colonial tactics.”
- “”Arab states are being asked to pay what are, effectively, reparations for Israel’s criminality.”
- Expect Netanyahu to double down on expanding Israel’s illegal hold on the West Bank as the price he pays the U.S. for changing tactics in Gaza.”
And he concludes:
“Restoring the Israeli control and sense of impunity and security of Oct 6, 2003, is untenable, intolerable, and fundamentally unstable. “Peace” requires an end to the Occupation, it means Palestinian freedom and self-determination. None of those things is on offer in this agreement.”

Ceasefire brings desperately needed relief to a population surviving a genocidal counterinsurgency campaign. Sadly, their trauma, and that of all of colonized Palestine won’t be ended by this deal
