A deep dive into media misreporting from Amsterdam

JVL Introduction

Much work has been done to expose the execrable reporting from Amsterdam portraying extreme racist Israeli football hooligans as innocent victims of an anti-Jewish pogrom reminiscent of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

Here we take a deep dive into the story with an investigation by Paddy French of the way Sky News, which has an overtly pro-Israel news editor on its staff, forced its own reporter to invert the truth.

In a video for Double Down News, writer and director Richard Sanders shows how world media spread utter falsehoods accusing Dutch citizens of North African heritage of hunting down Jews in the streets.

Not only did the coverage recklessly run the risk of stoking anti-Muslim sentiment, its ludicrous distortions made it impossible to unpick where understandable outrage at the violence of Maccabi Tel Aviv fans openly advocating genocide against Palestinians included some instances of genuine antisemitism. These are bound to increase if the Palestinian struggle for liberation from settler-colonialism is constantly portrayed as a battle between Muslims and Jews.

  • I note that the unlovely Eylon Levy makes an appearance in this article. Here is his Wiki entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eylon_Levy in which the Times of Israel https://www.timesofisrael.com/israels-newest-british-born-international-spokesperson-is-raising-some-eyebrows/ says of him:
“As his interview with a Colombian station begins, Levy, fully energized, assumes a Sphinx-like expression and delivers an impressive barrage of well-reasoned, well-crafted arguments. There’s no hesitation. He doesn’t play the victim, doesn’t argue, doesn’t philosophize.

Levy wears a face of restrained anger when talking about children, a penetrating look when discussing soldiers, and a neutral expression when mentioning the prime minister – the same prime minister against whom Levy demonstrated with shirts that read “Democracy or Rebellion” just over two months ago. Nonetheless, no one can detect a even hint of criticism in him [Netanyahu]” He’s a very clever young man… who may have earned a footnote in history by using the memorable phrase ‘the mother of all thumpings’ when ranting about Hamas. He is an accomplished translator and should stick to that in my opinion. His screen presence is unhelpful, he is cocky, bumptious and haughty. Bound to get up viewers’ noses even those who may not differ with his worldview. He is a P.I.T.A.

Mouin Rabbani- 10 November: Thugs and Hooligans

    November 11, 2024

It’s now pretty clear what happened in Amsterdam this week. But first some background.

For over a decade the football governing bodies FIFA, the International Federation of Football Associations, and UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, have consistently rejected demands to suspend or expel the Israel Football Association (IFA) and individual Israeli football clubs from their ranks.

FIFA and UEFA have been formally requested to do so by the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) on multiple occasions, and have additionally been called upon to adopt measures against the IFA by a variety of activists and fans who launched the Red Card Israeli Racism campaign.

The demands to sanction Israeli football were made on a variety of grounds: that Israel is an institutionally racist state and should be treated no differently than apartheid South Africa (suspended by FIFA in 1961) and Rhodesia (suspended in 1970); that the IFA includes clubs based in illegal settlements in the illegally-occupied Palestinian territories…. that Israel has killed and maimed Palestinian players; that Israeli clubs systematically tolerate racist and genocidal conduct by supporters; and a variety of other grounds, most recently that Israel is perpetrating genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip that has resulted in the killing of numerous Palestinian players, officials, and staff.

The PFA petitions were based not only on general principles or international human rights treaties, but rather, and primarily, FIFA’s and UEFA’s own regulations, which explicitly prohibit the conduct Israel, the IFA, and various IFA teams are engaged in.
