75 years of the nakba – time to end collusion

JVL Introduction

Claudia Webbe MP for Leicester East marks the 75th anniversary of the nakba by recalling what it involved and continues to involve in terms of Palestinian suffering and denial of their rights.

At the same time the British government collaborates with the Israeli regime, recently welcoming prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he presides over the most right-wing government in Israel’s history.

When governments, refuse to act, insists Webbe, ordinary people have no choice but to act.

She focuses here on the campaign by Palestine Action against arms manufacturer Elbit Systems and on the government’s heavy-handed repressive action against it which threatens the civil liberties of all of us.

When our government refuses to act, says Webbe, direct action in the form of peaceful protest is clearly justified.

Action in solidarity with Palestine deserves our full support

75 years on, the Nakba is a continuing process of occupation and oppression, not a one-off event — so the campaign to end Elbit Systems’ presence in Britain is both necessary and justified

  • This Saturday 13th May at 1pm there is a meeting being organised by Liverpool Friends of Palestine at St Luke’s, the ‘bombed out church’ to commemorate the ongoing Nakba. Attention will also be drawn to the travesty of apartheid Israel being allowed to participate in Eurovision, currently being held in Liverpool.

  • Not just the government that is complicit in war crimes: the opposition led by Starmer offers no support to the Palestinian resistance. Starmer funded by wealthy developer who also fund BICOM and its off-shoot –We Believe in Israel.

  • We are getting nowhere by concentrating on condemning Israel, instead we should be condemning those that support Israel, especially the Tories and Labour under Starmer, plus the United States. My reply to many Tweets that ask about the US aid to Israel, in 2021 they gave £2.7 billion. I tell them that the US sees Israel as its Fully Armed, Middle East, Military Base. It is also helping the funding to replace the missiles that Israel regularly fires into Gaza. PS, all paid for by the American Taxpayers. Who know, maybe the US public might start asking questions.

  • One (at least) of the arrested Shut Elbin Down protesters told me the police barred her from returning to ANY part of Leicestershire (presumably for the month-long duration of the “Siege”) as part of her bail conditions.

My memory of similar bail conditions set by the police for protesters during the Badger Cull is that they’re ILLEGAL. The judge said exclusion from the immediate area in which the alleged offence had happened was legal but barring arrestees from a wide area (eg more than 10 miles distance?) wasn’t.

I think the police did exceed their legal powers at different times in a number of different ways. I also think they didn’t properly consider their “duty of care” to the protesters and their property.
