The EU resists upholding International Law for Palestine

JVL Introduction

The UK may have left the EU but it remains an important international organisation with influence on the world stage yet it seems to be tying itself in knots over Israel and Palestine.  In doing so it is failing to fulfil its legal duties – which is also what the UK and USA are doing.

The EU’s Chief Legal Officer advised that a decision in the Hague did not mean that EU States should ban the import of goods from Israeli settlements.  Other legal experts cite the ICJ ruling that states should end all support for Israel’s occupation of Palestine.

Francesca Albanese (UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine) said that the EU’s to the ICJ opinion was “legally flawed, politically damaging, and morally compromised.”  Furthermore that “The EU is neglecting its responsibility to uphold international law,” she said. “This bending of rules for political convenience erodes the credibility of EU foreign policy and betrays the trust of people beyond Palestine.”

  • We’ve witnessed the European facade of “Human rights” and “International Law”, and the United Nations Charter, torn to shreds and exposed as cover for the United States and its imperialist allies to impose what’s in their own interests. MP Tony Benn in the British House of Commons, quoted the UN Charter, as Tony Blair and his master, George Bush, declared war on Iraq. Today, as the bodies pile up in Northern Gaza and Lebanon, we need to remind ourselves of those now meaningless words:

WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED

to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and

to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and

to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and

to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

The UN is dead. It has exposed, in live-stream, its impotence and complicity in supporting the worst ever genocide against any ethnic group in the history of mankind.

  • The US, UK and EU have shown openly their position on Gaza and Ukraine as being double standards. Can countries that called themselves democracies, show such a lack of humanity when it comes to the death of civilians? When women and children are the main victims of indiscriminate bombing carried out by the IDF? The irony is that their decisions on Palestine are not in line with what ordinary people stand for, including Israelis and Jews that form part of the population in the US, UK and EU.
