Ireland stands with South Africa on Israel’s genocide

On 7th November 2024, the Irish Parliament (The Dáil) has passed a non-binding motion agreeing that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza”. It will also join South Africa in its Case at the International Court of Justice that Israel is committing genocide. We are pleased to publish the speech by Micheál Martin, the Mimister for Foreign Affairs. Many of us may think Ireland could go further and that the framing of a two State solution to the conflict is open to criticism as it seems more unlikely than ever. However, other than South Africa, Ireland has gone much further than most countries, and we acknowledge and welcome their commitment to peace and to dignity and independence for the Palestinian people. We await a similar statement unequivocally recognising the injustice and heinous actions perpetrated by Israel from the governments of the UK, Germany and the USA.

Opening statement by the Tánaiste in Dáil Éireann on Gaza

Thankyou, Ireland, for your impressive leadership and activity.
The EU bloc is moving – but far too slowly – towards EU wide action in the protection of the Palestinians and the punishment of Israel for its breaches of international law. France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Slovakia as well as Ireland are all part of the group acting independently and to some extent in concert with each other to curb Israel.
We’re in a race against time to stop Israel’s genocide and war crimes, though, and we’re still far behind. There are something like 2 million Palestinians at Gaza only short weeks away (at most) from death by starvation, disease and bombing. The ICJ won’t even rule on the most recent case against Israel until July 2025.
I believe the criminal, political and economic consequences of the evils Israel has done since 8 Oct 2023 will soon destroy it as a functioning state – the reverse of the outcome Netanyahu and co expected. Even Israel’s bitterest enemies won’t find much comfort in that; the price will have been far too high.
