And “there is one thing we can be sure of: the climate of denial regarding the health ministry’s figures helped Israel keep slaughtering Palestinians en masse with impunity.”

Finally the Israeli military accept the figures of deaths in Gaza provided by the “Hamas run Health Ministry”. One wonders what took them so long and also why now? Is this so they can draw a line and not accept the predicted real numbers, eg by the Lancet as far back as July 2024 that the death rate was likely to already be 186,000.
Speaking for the Jewish Bloc on the London march for Palestine on Jan 31, Jonathan Rosenhead pointed out that the Nazi slaughter which gave rise to the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and generated the slogan NEVER AGAIN, FOR ANYONE, also produced the state of Israel and its genocide against the Palestinian people.
It shouldn’t be necessary to monitor an “impartial” national broadcaster, but alas it is essential.
So some JVL members spend an inordinate amount of their time monitoring the BBC and drawing attention to its lapses of impartiality.

The Knesset is debating and likely to pass a bill, pressed by the far right Jewish Power Party, which will legitimise Lynch Law. It is an apartheid law which will mandate death by hanging only for Palestinians convicted of ‘terrorist’ killing but will not apply to Israelis. Settlers who rampage through the West Bank murdering Palestinians are not covered.
The law would be wrong even if the state killings followed a fair judicial process which Israel military courts do not.

Gaza: It’s not really a conflict but a colonial occupation of Palestinian land. The real issue is Israel’s military occupation. It’s the most prolonged and brutal military occupation of modern times. That’s the real background; the October 7 Hamas attack is an expression of Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation. People don’t know the history of this conflict between Israel and Hamas. The past is crucial for understanding how we got here. It’s my job as a historian to put Hamas’s behavior in its proper historical context.
