The orchestrated persecution of Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian
JVL Introduction
Shahrazad Odeh writes about the harassment and persecution of her former academic supervisor at the Hebrew University, Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian.
Kept overnight in gaol in April in utterly humiliating conditions, and then released in the teeth of police opposition, it as the latest in a series of abusive actions against Prof Shalhoub-Kevorkian since October 7.
Her crime this time: in an English-language podcast she called for Zionism to be abolished to which her university responded that it is “proud to be an Israeli, public, and Zionist institution” and fired her (though she was reinstated later).
This is an institution which prides itself on its respect for academic values. It didn’t stop it for calling for her resignation in late October last year for signing a statement demanding a ceasefire and calling the Gaza war a genocide.
Odeh also describes the experiences of discrimination of Palestinian students at the university and makes clear how it, like other academic institutions in Israel, is an integral and enthusiastic pillar of the Zionist system, producing knowledge and cadre to support Israel’s military-industrial and surveillance complex.

A vicious campaign by Israeli academia, police, and media to silence the professor shows Palestinians they have no safe place in Zionist institutions.

I am surprised there has been no comments about this very disturbing but excellent article about how academia for Palestinians is so difficult. I admire any teacher or student that are choosing to stay under such adverse conditions. A very worrying dystopian view of Israeli Academia.
