Jonathan Cook takes a step back to understand Gaza in a wider context. He sees it
- as “a mix of testing ground and shop window” for Israeli technologies of homeland security in increasing demand from clients across the West;
and - as an exemplar of the burgeoning attempt by states to sidestep the restrictions placed on them by international law, especially the condemnation of collective punishment.
International law has been stood on its head to allow anyone connected to Hamas in any way (bin collectors and the like), or any building, to be considered a legitimate target; to allow the labelling of Gazan civilians as “human animals” by Defence Minister Yoav Gallant without significant protest.
So that, suggests Cook, the same responses can be used against protests at home when the time comes…

It’s now really echoing the late-1930s more by the day. Fascist forces over-running a subjugated populace, egged on by right-wing media, and with the connivance of defence contractors who see a playground for testing their latest kit – on one Guernica after another, every few hours.
