Jail without trial – or even charge

The brutal reality of the innocuous sounding “administrative detention”: arrested without charge, mistreated and families kept in ignorance. Ayman Ghrayaeb, 42 year old father of four set off expecting to be home in a few hours. Instead he was arrested, and even before he was questioned (after being starved and beaten for six days), his lawyer had already been told that he was to be placed under administrative detention.
Now he could be kept indefinitely as the initial period of six months can be extended and there are no charges and no process, not even the sham of a trial in military courts with conviction rates just short of 100%
In September 2005, of the 10,000 Palestinians incarcerated by Israel 3,600 are held under administrative detention (Middle East Monitor). Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is one of these prisoners and he had already been in detention for a year with no sign of a release date. (Front Line Defenders).
In South Africa the Apartheid regime used a similar detention power that allowed imprisonment for 90 days and often when people were released they were rearrested. That was terrible, this is even worse. It is unconscionable that this happens and unforgiveable that Israel is still welcomed into the international community, politically, culturally and most certainly for trade, especially weapons.

It always puzzles me that pressure is not put on Israel to stop this. Western political leaders look away. My thoughts and prayers go to Ayman and his family.
