From Israel to Russia, occupiers are remaking the world order
JVL Introduction
Haggai Matar of +972 Magazine reflects on the dilemmas faced by Israel as it attempts to negotiate the Ukraine crisis while maintaining its cosy relationship with Russia which allows Israel freedom to bomb Syria.
Israel, he argues, has long known that in order to avoid being held accountable for its crimes against Palestinians, it needs strong political allies.
In the long-term it couldn’t be sure of wholehearted European and American support, so under former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel began to forge an alliance of right-wing and authoritarian governments – in an attempt to offer an alternative to liberal democracy and international law – including Brazil, Hungary, India, China, the Philippines, and of course, Russia.
“This anti-liberal axis, “says Matar, “has outlived Netanyahu, and now, as the Bennett-Lapid government refuses to condemn Russia, it is operating with the same goal and the same loyalties in mind.”
