Israel uses spyware, weapons and agritech to buy influence in Africa

JVL Introduction

That governments try to influence other governments, supporting those they like and undermining those they are hostile to, is common knowledge.

The US is past master at it, intervening historically to bring down regimes it has disapproved of, particularly in Latin America.

Russia, too, has played a spoiling role, notably in the 2020 US elections.

But the sheer scale of smaller powers intervening in these ways has often been neglected. It shouldn’t be, particularly with Israel and its interventions in Africa.

Here ANC MP Zwelivelile Mandela gives an account of the breath-taking scale of Israel’s intervention from the legitimate – but questionable – deployment of foreign aid, through to the supply of military and surveillance technology to several repressive governments.

He claims that Israeli companies and individuals are also involved in election campaigns in almost every African country, undermining some of Africa’s most stable democracies.

Israel’s assistance to African states — whether agricultural, military or surveillance technology — is not philanthropic, suggests Mandela, but “a patronising, transactional relationship. It is chequebook diplomacy in action.”

What evidence do you have that Russia has interfered in US elections?

  • Ultimately, the US continues to fund Israel, so who’s, really, behind this usurpation of fragile democracies, in Africa?

The US Government, or US oligarchs?

  • He may be Nelson Mandels’s grandson but it doesn’t mean that you can believe a word he says, eg his take on Ukraine:
“The global military-industrial complex that beat the drums of war in Ukraine feeds an agenda of which they are the sole beneficiaries,”
“They are joined in this disgraceful endeavor by neo-Nazis in Ukraine, the Apartheid Israel dogs of war and those in NATO intent on advancing cold war politics.”
Nothing to do with Russia of course.

  • The more I read about what goes on in the world secretly the more despair I feel for the future of mankind. Another flood.?…oh I think that’s happening with climate change. Perhaps this is the punishment.
