Is this the end – of Gaza?

This poignant, if pessimistic, article by Chris Hedges needs to be read; he argues that if the genocide continues, it will not only be the end of Gaza but also the end of western civilisation.  (Although it is important to note that Gandhi said of western civilisation that “it would be a good idea”.) But it will not be the end; people will not take that without a reaction and it may be violent as Hedges describes below.

What the horrific and sustained attacks, pummelling and murder of starving, caged people certainly exposes is how much western civilisation is failing, as it has nearly always failed.  Failed to act with integrity, failed to act with consistency and failed even to uphold the international laws, often designed precisely to protect people from the horrors of the Nazi era and not only from genocide but also occupation and starvation.

One day there will be a detailed list of all the occasions on which Israel has broken international law and future generations will wonder how they were able to do that without action being taken by “civilised” nations as these atrocities and barbarism were live streamed by the victims.

It is a painful read but I recommend, for example, checking each of the links at the end of the first paragraph to remind ourselves of just some of the horrors that we are in danger of getting used to.

We (the people) are continuing to work to prevent Hedges’ worst predictions becoming reality. Our politicians have almost universally failed us but ordinary, extraordinary people are doing that as well as the Freedom Flotilla, and the activists on the Madleen (and, indeed, The Conscience) the ‘Sumud’ convoy from Tunisia and the People’s March to Gaza aim to converge on Rafah tomorrow.
